“Zhong Kui: Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal” is a landmark production in the Oriental Fantasy genre, directed by Oscar-winner Peter Pau (Bao Dexi) and Zhao Tianyu. Starring A-list icons Chen Kun and Li Bingbing, this project represents the pinnacle of high-budget visual storytelling in Asia.
Tasked with the film’s visual promotion, we moved beyond traditional trailers. We engineered a Visual Identity System that fused complex VFX with innovative editing techniques to amplify the film’s “Epic Texture,” ensuring it resonated as a masterpiece of “Oriental Magic” in the global market.
Client: Desen International Media
Sector: Film, Entertainment & Global Theatrical Distribution
Scope: Promo Design / Motion Identity / Poster Architecture / VFX-Mixed Synthesis
Impact: Setting a new visual benchmark for Chinese fantasy blockbusters.
The primary obstacle was ensuring that the film’s massive investment in CGI translated into a palpable “cinematic texture” on screen. We needed to avoid the “digital gloss” common in fantasy films and instead create a visual language that felt grounded, ancient, and yet technologically superior. The challenge was to synchronize the actors’ performances with high-end special effects in a way that felt like a singular, breathing world.
We treated the promotional materials not as mere advertisements, but as an extension of the film’s DNA.
Creative Split-Screen: We implemented a sophisticated split-screen mode to juxtapose character emotions with the raw power of the supernatural elements, creating a narrative tension within the promo itself.
Visual Reinforcement: By utilizing “Creative Mixed-Cut” (混剪), we isolated the high-fidelity VFX sequences and re-integrated them with specialized color grading to maximize the perceived production value.
We leveraged a hybrid workflow of special effects integration and creative montage. By focusing on the “Tactile Quality” of the magic—the ice, the fire, and the dark crystal—we ensured that every frame served the overarching goal of “Shocking Beauty” (震撼且唯美).
The campaign successfully established “Zhong Kui” as the definitive Oriental Magic epic of its year. The promotional system provided a “Texture Gold Standard” for the industry, proving that with the right visual architecture, digital effects can transcend technology and become high art.
